Lithium-Ion Battery Extinguishers

The Lith-Ex AVD lithium-ion battery fire extinguishers can be identified by a green band. They are designed for fires involving lithium-ion batteries – examples of typical lithium-ion battery fires include:

  • Laptops
  • Mobile phones
  • E-cigarettes
  • Power tools
  • Drones
  • E-scooters and bikes
  • Energy storage

Lith-Ex extinguishers are available in a range of sizes, from 500ml for smaller batteries like those in e-cigarettes, to 25 and 50-litre versions for large installations and energy storage facilities. The versatility and efficacy of these extinguishers means they are suitable for use in a range of environments including domestic, industrial, transport, waste, marine and energy storage settings.

Lith Ex Li-ion fire extinguishers, as they’re also known, are CE-certified. They contain a non-toxic compound called Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD), and they’re suitable for enclosed spaces. It is important that lithium-ion battery fires are tackled as quickly as possible, as these extinguishers are most effective when the fire is in its fledgling stages.

What are Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are a type of rechargeable battery, and they’re used in everyday electronics like laptops and mobile phones. The reason they’re so widely used is that they provide the most energy amongst rechargeable batteries on the market – their main competitor is the nickel-metal hybrid battery (NiMH), but NiMH batteries lose 20% of their charge every month, compared to just 5% a month for lithium-ion batteries.

The energy density of lithium-ion batteries is far superior, too. Lithium-ion batteries can store 150 watt-hours of energy per kilogram, whereas NiMH batteries can store 100 watt-hours per kilogram. When coupled with the fact that lithium-ion batteries are lighter than other batteries, the winner becomes clear.

For all their strengths, lithium-ion batteries can be susceptible to fires, thanks to their vulnerability to extreme temperatures. A process called thermal runaway is often central to the cause of lithium-ion battery fires: when a battery cell fails, the temperature increases, which releases more energy and breaks more cells, causing further temperature increases. This chain reaction can reach temperatures of up to 400°C very quickly. That’s why, in environments where these batteries are heavily used, lithium-ion fire extinguishers are required.

To find out more about our lithium-ion fire extinguishers, request a free site survey or to arrange for the installation of fire extinguishers of any kind, don’t hesitate to contact Scutum London today. We have over 20 years of experience in fire extinguisher installation and maintenance, and we’re here to help you.

What are Lithium-Ion Battery Extinguishers used for?

Lithium-ion battery extinguishers should be used on any fire involving devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, because they have been specifically designed to deal with the dangers of a thermal runaway and to prevent such a fire from getting out of control. They are recommended in environments where multiple devices are being stored and charged.

Lithium-Ion Battery Extinguishers FAQs

In which areas does Scutum London provide lithium-ion battery extinguishers?

If you’re based in London, Surrey or anywhere else in the South East of England, we can supply, install and maintain lithium-ion battery extinguishers for your commercial premises.

What are lithium-ion battery extinguishers used for?

Lithium-ion battery extinguishers are specifically designed to deal with fires emanating from electronic items powered by lithium-ion batteries, such as laptops, power tools and e-scooters.

Does Scutum London offer free consultations for lithium-ion battery extinguishers?

Our team is always available to give advice over the phone, or why not arrange a free site visit by one of our experienced engineers? They’ll be able to assess your premises and make an informed recommendation as to your need for lithium-ion battery and other extinguishers.

Do lithium-ion battery extinguishers need to be serviced/maintained?

If your fire risk assessment identifies a need for lithium-ion battery extinguishers, then you need to make sure they are regularly serviced to ensure their continued efficacy. Scutum London can carry out any servicing, maintenance or repair work required.

How quickly can Scutum London deliver fire extinguishers?

We make sure we keep all our fire extinguishers in stock so that we can ensure delivery within 2-5 days of you placing your order. That’s because we want to make sure you have the extinguisher you need as soon as possible.

Are lithium-ion battery extinguishers available to hire?

Yes. Because you might only need a particular extinguisher for a short period – for a one-off project or event, for example – all the fire extinguishers we supply are available to hire for only as long as you need them.

Is Scutum London accredited for fire extinguisher installation?

Yes. We ensure that we stay fully up to date with any necessary training and accreditations required to do our job safely and effectively on behalf of all our clients. You can find out more about our accreditations by clicking here.

Do you also offer fire extinguisher disposal?

Like any other type of extinguisher, lithium-ion battery extinguishers have a limited lifespan and eventually will need to be replaced. Because they count as hazardous waste, disposing of all extinguishers needs to be done according to strict legislation, and at Scutum London, we’re fully accredited to dispose of them safely and responsibly.

Where should I place my lithium-ion battery extinguishers?

As with all other extinguishers, your lithium-ion battery extinguisher should be placed conveniently for where any such fire is likely to happen. That will usually be where electronic devices powered by lithium-ion batteries are being stored or charged. Your fire risk assessment should identify the best location for your extinguishers.

How common are lithium-ion battery fires?

As we use more and more devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, so there are more fires connected to their use, especially ones involving e-scooters and e-bikes. The London Fire Brigade recently reported that in 2023 it had been called out to fires involving e-scooters and e-bikes on average once every two days.
