What Are CO2 Fire Extinguishers Used for?

CO2 extinguishers are the only fire extinguishers that can be used on all electrical fires. They can also be used on Class B fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol, paint and solvents. They work by replacing the oxygen a fire needs to thrive with carbon dioxide, thereby suffocating the fire. Because the gas is discharged at a very low temperature, they also remove the heat from the fire.

CO2 extinguishers leave no residue after use, making them doubly suitable for use on delicate electronic equipment and in server rooms. However, because they remove oxygen, caution should be exercised when using them, especially in enclosed areas where there might be a risk of suffocation.

CO2 Extinguishers FAQs

In which areas does Scutum London provide CO2 extinguishers?

Our CO2 extinguishers are available to any businesses operating in London, Surrey and much of the rest of the South East of England.

What are CO2 extinguishers used for?

CO2 extinguishers can be safely used on electrical fires and Class B fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol and paint.

Does Scutum London offer free consultations for CO2 extinguishers?

Yes, if you’re not sure if CO2 extinguishers are the right choice for your premises, you can talk through your options with one of our experienced team on the phone, or book a free site visit by one of our fully qualified engineers to assess your needs.

Do CO2 extinguishers need to be serviced/maintained?

Not only is regular servicing of CO2 extinguishers a good idea to ensure their effectiveness in the event of a fire, it’s also a legal requirement. In addition to annual checks, CO2 extinguishers need a full overhaul every ten years.

How quickly can Scutum London deliver fire extinguishers?

Because we keep all our fire extinguishers in stock at our local warehouse, we can ensure rapid delivery of CO2 extinguishers every time. That will usually be within 2-5 days. Fire safety is far too important to be held up by supply issues!

Are fire extinguishers available to hire?

Yes – we understand that some people may only need CO2 extinguishers for one-off projects or events. That’s why we make them available for hire for as long as you need them.

Is Scutum London accredited for the installation of CO2 extinguishers?

Yes – we’re fully accredited and qualified in all aspects of fire safety, fire detection and fire control, including the installation of CO2 extinguishers.

Do you also offer fire extinguisher disposal?

Yes – CO2 extinguishers, like all extinguishers, count as hazardous waste and can’t just be thrown away with general waste or put in a skip. They need to be disposed of safely and responsibly by accredited operators such as Scutum London.

What is the difference between a CO2 extinguisher and an ABC fire extinguisher?

A CO2 extinguisher can be safely used on all electrical fires, while an ABC fire extinguisher – also known as a powder or dry chemical extinguisher – can only be used on electrical equipment of 1000v or less. Both can be used on Class B fires involving flammable liquids, while an ABC extinguisher can also be used on Class A and Class C fires.

What temperature should a CO2 extinguisher be kept at?

It’s important that your CO2 fire extinguisher is not subject to extreme temperatures, so you should always ensure that it is not exposed to temperatures of less than -30°C or greater than 60°C.
